Industrial Edge

Summary

The Provider Access Industrial Edge blueprint aims to provide a platform for running NFV (e.g. vRAN, vBNG, SEBA) and MEC (e.g. MobileEdgeX) workloads on a small footprint, self-managing Kubernetes-on-bare metal cluster. The release 4 blueprint supports managing a whole edge stack only using Kubernetes resource configs (manifests). Edge stacks created with this blueprint can run both containerised and VM-based workloads (via KubeVirt) on a common platform. Release 4 also includes multi-network support (via Multus). Applications on top of this platform are managed via the Operator Framework. In Release 4, we worked on upgrading the existing components and stabilizing the platform, plus replacing the old CentOS RT worker nodes by the native support of CoreOS, the base operating system for our Kubernetes distribution: OpenShiftaddresses a common use case in manufacturing which is "predictive maintenance", the detection of anomalies in sensor data coming from production line servers to be able to schedule maintenance and avoid costly downtimes. Anomaly detection is based on machine learning inference on streaming sensor data.

The 3-node, highly-available factory edge clusters produced by this blueprint are manageble via a central management hub running Open Cluster ManagerThe management hub cluster also hosts OpenDataHub, which allows streaming data mirrored from factory edge clusters to be stored in a data lake for re-training of machine learning models and deploying updated models back to the factory sites. OpenDataHub includes Jupyter Notebooks for data scientists to analyse data and work on models.

Akraino Release 4 is the first release this blueprint participates in.
